Maria works on some miniature paintings of Nicaraguan cultural figures

Gerardo is working on earrings made out of jicaro shell. It is a LONG process!

Maria and Gerardo share a laugh while they work on the mini paintings.

Every Thursday I look forward to making jewelry with these fun folks just a block from the cultural center. We meet on the porch of Maria and Gerardo's house to chat, laugh, create and learn new jewelry designs and techniques from one another. Maria has started to sell some of her jewelry and now has her own label.

Gerardo is a painting teacher at the cultural center and one of the most creative people I know. You can see some earrings he is working on made out of jicaro (pronounced "hee-cah-ro") shell in the photo. I would like to document the process some time from start to finish. Jicaro is a fruit that has a hard brown shell after it is dried. He cuts, sands, carves and paints it to make the earrings. He's also painting a new mural at the center with some of his students that I hope to help out with.

His wife Maria and his daughter Sarita (not pictured) are also extremely creative. Every week they show me some new creation they have made. You can see some of their awesome soda can earrings a few posts back.
